Charlie Baker on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, activated the state's National Guard to help with busing students to school as districts across the country struggle to hire enough drivers.
BOSTON — Massachusetts’ governor on Monday activated the state’s National Guard to help with busing students to school as districts across the country struggle to hire enough drivers. They’ll start training Tuesday, with some 90 of them to be initially deployed in four diverse cities north of Boston that have dealt with driver shortages— Chelsea, Lawrence, Lowell, and Lynn.
It’s not clear how long the guard would be helping with busing or how many districts it plans to support. But Baker stressed the busing duties won’t interfere with the guard’s ability to respond to other major state emergencies.“The Guard has a proven track record of success supporting civilian authorities,” the governor said in a statement. “Their frequent side-by-side training with state and local first responders makes them well-suited for a variety of missions.
That's horable
In Mass, many school bus drivers and crossing guards positions were filled by retired seniors. When schools were closed for a year, the seniors decided not to go back. Same for poll workers. Seniors have dropped out of the work force.
MassGov pay school bus drivers a living wage and give them reasonable, trustworthy working hours, no funny stuff. You will get applicants. Bus drivers used to be school students with reg DLs who parked the bus at the family farm. Now it is considered a proper adult job. So pay.
Wages have nothing to do with the shortage. The problem is dealing with bratty kids and deranged asshole parents.
JimLaPorta Come on people, wear a mask, get vaccinated and go to work or do a job.
Pay.them.a.liveable.wage.
JimLaPorta Okay do people understand that being a school bus driver is a very low paid very part time job, one they totally precludes it from being one of two jobs you have for most people because of the hours required, and the fact that you usually have to be on call?
Hey. Parents are getting and additional $300/wk? Let the parents drive them.
Amazon pays more. Hell Uber pays more.
Wow. Well I guess you don't have to pay NG much.
Bus drivers don't want to become a red state Homeless statistic while employed, and risking their lives with the children of people who don't value their ability to have a home.
😂😂. What a joke. We’re done as a country.
Maybe try a better hourly wage? 🤷♀️ The National Guard, seriously?
Too much stimulus!!!!!
Make them walk to school. I walked to school in the snow, uphill, both ways.

I can think of nothing better for the national guard to do. Seriously.
Who in the hell would want to drive a bus full disease riddled children?
