After several months of daily positive tests remaining in the single digits, almost 145 people tested positive over several days last week, according to the university. Undergraduates accounted for more than 90 percent of those cases, with about half occurring in two residential colleges, Vice President for Administration Kevin E. Kirby wrote in an April 7 letter to faculty, staff and students. Parties hosted by Rice’s residential colleges — known as “publics” — have also been canceled through the end of the semester, according to university spokesman Doug Miller.

It’s not sudden uptick but a predictable one. Take away a preventative tool and that’s what happens.

Rice is a private university. State universities don’t get that luxury thanks to Abbott. Houston Methodist requires vaccines because they are private. The University of Texas medical system and Memorial Herman, again get the Abbott treatment.

Sounds smart to me, unless you think human life isn’t worth a minor inconvenience.
