In Japan, social pressure to wear masks remains strong even as business has returned to nearly normal.

These cultures have been using masks for colds and flu for decades. I was in Japan in the early '60s and masks were very common and a good idea. They were only worn by the sick. But be clear they protected by catching cough and sneezes, mucus, etc . They do not restrict airflow.

Not sure so much if it is social pressure as it is the norm in Japan to mask up during winter seasons.

The government has been encouraging not wearing a mask outdoors since last summer. Yet it’s very very rare to see a person outdoors in Japan without one. Japan
