FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The pressure to be “the perfect parent” is not unfamiliar to many mothers and fathers. However, according to a recent study from Ohio State University College of Nursing, the pressure to try to be “perfect” leads to unhealthy impacts on both parents and their children.
“If parents are setting goals for themselves or their children too high, what this does is causes frustration,” Gawlick related, “and that can cause low self-esteem because these goals are unattainable.” “Nobody can be a perfect parent,” reminded Bernadette Melnyk, Ohio State’s vice president for health promotion and chief wellness officer. “What I advise parents is, we want to engage in positive parenting.”“You can look at people on Instagram, you can just see people walking around,” Gawlick said, “and think, how do they do that? How do they seem to have it all together when I don’t?”
