The charges were announced just minutes after the president’s former campaign chairman received his second federal sentence.

By Devlin Barrett and Devlin Barrett Reporter focusing on national security and law enforcement Email Bio Follow Matt Zapotosky Matt Zapotosky National security reporter covering the Justice Department Email Bio Follow March 13 at 2:09 PM President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was indicted Wednesday by a state grand jury in New York on charges of residential mortgage fraud — the announcement coming just minutes after Manafort was sentenced in federal court in Washington to...

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has urged the legislature to fix what Democrats call a “double-jeopardy loophole” in state law that could negate New York’s ability to prosecute anyone pardoned by the president. “No one is beyond the law in New York,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said in a statement announcing the indictment. “Following an investigation commenced by our office in March 2017, a Manhattan grand jury has charged Mr. Manafort with state criminal violations which strike at the heart of New York’s sovereign interests, including the integrity of our residential mortgage market.

The new state charges may draw criticism as politicizing a prosecutor’s authority, in what may be an effort by Vance to deter a pardon for Manafort. Depending on the case’s facts and the particular laws in question, state and federal prosecutors can, though, bring separate cases for the same offenses without implicating double jeopardy concerns.

What about New York state law against double jeopardy?

not true it was done in federal court so he can still be pardoned

Pile the charges on till he doesn't have a Carribean penny, centavo, or bitcoin left to his name. Then charge him with some shit he hasn't actually done.

LeChatNoire4 Justice will be served. One way, or another, our system is holding up. Thank God!

“No one is above the law in the state of New York”. Said NY Attorney General. Except of course Hillary Clinton and any Democrat in political office

Wow! You folks are obsessed.

Whatcha gonna do with this one Donny. Cant cover all your crooks every day!

No lube for Manafart. Let him suffer.

, when is Hillary going to get indicted for committing crimes against the U.S.? Why don't u 'journalists' do some real investigative reporting on that?

Difficult to believe that NYC did the indictment today. Manafort must pay his dues and if he lived he would know better. However, we have learned today that the politics of revenge must continue regardless our resentment of the endless insanity.

This would be ok if they used the same on denacrats that did the same thing.

And new York State needs to see that Bill Clinton registers as a sex offender

I should lose a couple of pounds doing the happy dance today!

Yeah, baby.

Jared Kushner couldn't care less whats going on. He is busy Leaking to the Press, selling Secrets to whoever will buy, passing U S classified info to Crown Prince Salman, and peddling Political influence all around the world. Kushner would sell his wife, if anybody would buy her.

Please send condolences to Manafort! He just can’t catch a break!!! Ok just go to jail everything will be fine!!!

He'll get a special cell with wheelchair access. 👍

The news just doesn’t get better. With luck, he’ll be pushing his wheelchair to the exercise yard till he dies.

Sucks to be Manafort!

So much for the 'stable genius' theory......should learn how to play chess.

NOW it gets serious.

I'm all for realDonaldTrump pardoning Manafort cause it would mean he would be forced to tell truth & not be able to invoke 5th

Wannabe Gangster

Trump chooses only the worst! Trump's picks completely show his stupidity and ignorance.

Will Trump pardon Manafort on his federal charges?

That's why Gamble v Alabama, currently before SCOTUS will be so important. A favorable ruling for Gamble can turn this on its head.

So, what kind of sentencing will he get in NY? 2 years? He'll be out so quick he'll just go back to a life of crime, or as rich people call it, 'an otherwise blameless life'.

Eat shit, Manafort.

And all his charges have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the Trump/Russia collusion LIE. Another big strike out for the false accusers. LOL!

The Womps, they are a-fallin’

Governor Cuomo was just crying about lost tax revenue and now they're putting all this money in a case on a parallel indictment because of how much they hate Donald Trump.

Important reminder: HE PICKED PENCE!

Woo hoo!!!
