That teller/bank officer is a moron and since they were acting in their official capacity TCF is liable. I had similar experience at the Flushing PNC. My branch was in another town. They were nasty and wouldn't clear a single cent despite monthly deposits in the thousands.

This is ridiculous! I’ve worked at a bank. If there are questions re: the validity of a check, most simply call the check owner (or even the bank it is drawn on) to verify. It’s not hard 💁🏼♀️

I've worked in banks. If a check is irregular (as in, way more than the person usually has in their account) it almost always goes on a hold, and very little (if any) can be cashed from it same-day. That's a risk thing, based on numbers. But, they may be racist too, who knows.
CNN race baiting. Banks love deposits. Every dollar deposited let's them loan out more money. Maybe the check looked unusual. Maybe they've had a run on check fraud. Does seem weird admittedly.

All they had to do was put a hold on the funds until it cleared. And they could have called the INSURANCE company as I am pretty sure his employer had insurance against being sued. Similar thing happened to me, I had a long talk with the branch manger. Never occurs again.
