A man was injured early Saturday after an apparent gas leak explosion at an east Houston residence, according to fire officials. Firefighters responded just after midnight at the 7100 block of Sherman and found a man in front of the a residence with first- and second-degree burns, HFD said. He was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in an unknown condition.
Houston fire officials said they believe the man had just moved into the second story of a garage converted into a duplex on the property. One other person was on the bottom floor of the structure but was alerted by neighbors and was not injured.Before being taken to the hospital, the man told medical first responders he had lit a cigarette just before the explosion, according to an HFD district chief.
A partial wall collapse and detachment from the home is leading investigators to initially believe the explosion was a product of a gas leak, authorities added.
