James Dale Reed, 42 years old, left a letter at the home of a Biden supporter saying, “when we capture Grandpa Biden we will all severely beat him to the point of death,” an affidavit from a Secret Service agent attached to the complaint said. The affidavit included a photo of the note, which also threatened Ms. Harris with sexual assault and said that “both will be executed on National Television.
“We take these types of threats extremely seriously. Such threats to commit violence are illegal and have no place in our democracy, and we will hold accountable those who make them,” Robert K. Hur, the U.S. attorney in Maryland, said in announcing the charges. Maryland authorities took Mr. Reed into custody on Oct. 16 on state charges related to the threat, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Now that federal charges have been filed he is expected to be transferred to federal custody at a later date, the office said.
Mr. Reed couldn’t be reached for comment. It couldn’t be determined whether he had a lawyer. The Biden-Harris campaign declined to comment.
