of a Jeep near 18th and Elm streets, according to an arrest affidavit. When contacted, Romero drove off at a slow speed and was driving all over the road.
Officers attempted to box the Jeep in, to bring it to a stop, and Romero allegedly rammed and pushed one of the patrol vehicles, which had overhead lights and sirens on, the affidavit said. When the Jeep was stopped, Romero ran from the scene. A perimeter was set up, K9 Graffit was released and ran into brush,. Two shots were fired by a Jefferson County Deputy after the initial shot was fired.
Graffit died at the scene and Romero surrendered to authorities and was arrested just before 5 a.m., according to authorities. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on March 17.

Letter: The Utah judiciary is in danger of becoming politicalized. That must not happen.Senate Bill 129 (from Sen. Kirk Cullimore) would collapse Utah’s eight judicial districts into just three and would create new judicial nominating commissions that could be fully partisan. Under the proposal, Salt Lake County would become part of a First Judicial District that would stretch north to Box Elder County, south to Millard County, east to Rich County, west to Tooele County and would also include Weber, Davis and Utah Counties. The proposal would eliminate the current bipartisan composition of the nominating commissions and would empower the Governor to appoint all the members of the judicial nominating commissions. Attorneys should not be allowed to serve in Legislative positions. Its a conflict of interest. Attorneys work in Judiciary branch of Gov.
