Man charged with killing Indiana police officer found dead in jail cell

Richmond police officials said they were told at 12:45 a.m. Thursday that Phillip M. Lee was found alone and unresponsive by correctional staff at the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Lee was in custody awaiting trial for the murder of 28-year-old Richmond Police Officer Seara Burton.Police did not release details about the 49-year-old suspect during a news conference Thursday.“Phillip had very severe mental health issues. It wasn’t something that developed in the last week or two,” Denise Turner, Lee's attorney, told Associated Press.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said he spoke with Burton's family, but he didn't disclose details of the call. The Richmond Police Department is still recovering from Burton's death, according to the police chief and mayor.
