The church was founded in 1943 by Arthur Peters and became a destination for civil rights activists, gospel singers and congregants. The choir has over the years featured celebrated vocalists and composers, including Mahalia Jackson, Jester Hairston, the Clara Ward Singers, Ethel Waters and Dorothy Maynor.
