Man arrested in deadly machete attack on Appalachian Trail hikers

A Massachusetts man faces a federal murder charge after he allegedly attacked two hikers on the Appalachian Trail, leaving one of them dead, according to the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia.

James Jordan, 30, was arrested Saturday morning and charged with one count of murder and one count of assault with the intent to murder, the US Attorney's Office said in a statement. Charges will be formally filed in US District Court in Abingdon on Monday morning, when Jordan is expected to make his first court appearance.

This has happened before. Always carry handguns when you go hiking, and travel in groups of 5 or more. Don't sleep in the lean twos at night, take photos of other hikers, and keep to yourself.

It is rare in terms of relativity, but sadly it has happened many times. I think hikers do need to be aware of their surroundings and going solo is not always the best way. Let people know where you are and have check in times by text msg/ phone and keep them.
