Tuesday morning in what authorities are calling a domestic violence incident.
Lucas Cooper was arrested and detained in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Tuesday afternoon, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. He is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and endangering the welfare of a child in the shooting death of Temara King, at the Toy Factory Apartments on Bergen Ave.
King, 35, taught third grade at School 5 in Jersey City, according to the school district website. She had worked in the Jersey City Public School District since 2013.“The senseless loss of Temara King saddens our hearts,” Jersey City schools Superintendent Norma Fernandez said. “She was an outstanding young educator, and our thoughts are with her family and friends. She will be sorely missed.”
The prosecutor’s office did not specify the relationship between Cooper and King but called the killing an act of domestic violence.Just after 7 a.m., Jersey City police responded to a report of shots fired on the third floor of the building and found King with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 8:06 a.m., the prosecutor said. Since the incident is being investigated as an act of domestic violence, additional information cannot be released at this time, the prosecutor’s office said.
