A fiery Jose Angel Ruiz cursed during an interview with a San Antonio police detective after he was told his girlfriend had implicated him in the death of her youngest daughter as the one who inflicted the fatal injuries. The couple were both under suspicion after bringing Mercedes Losoya, 5, to a hospital on Feb. 7, 2022, where she was pronounced dead. Injuries covered the child’s body, head to toe.
Ruiz admitted he pinched Mercedes, but after some back and forth, said Mercedes’ sister “would beat her ass and pull her hair out of her head. Katrina let that happen.” Mendoza, 24, pleaded guilty last summer to a lesser charge of assault in exchange for a 45-year prison term and her testimony against Ruiz, 27. Jurors earlier Wednesday saw graphic images of Mercedes on a hospital bed that Saiz took after she was pronounced dead. Some members of the panel cried and at least one looked away.
