Maj. Gen. Hensley named new commander for Air Force’s cyber unit

The Air Force ’s cyber headquarters in San Antonio is slated to get a new commander who’ll lead the agency as it prepares to take on more responsibility and potentially move to a new campus on Port San Antonio . Air Force Maj. Gen. Thomas Hensley was selected for promotion to lieutenant general and named the next commander of the 16th Air Force , the Defense Department announced Friday.

Port San Antonio wants to build $1 billion-plus campus to house Air Forces Cyber In February, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall announced sweeping changes to the service to better position it to counter countries such as China and Russia, an effort it calls “Great Power Competition.” According to the plan, the 16th Air Force would be elevated to a “standalone service component command” and no longer fall under Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Port San Antonio jockeying to be ‘flying car’ hub “This process would allow us to operate at more commercial construction speed and to build a facility, we think, about a billion dollars less than what it would cost” under typical military construction processes, Perschbach said this month. The Port, he said, could provide a schematic design of the campus south of Billy Mitchell Boulevard and Gen. Hudnell Drive in about 18 months at a cost of roughly $14 million.
