Maine town shuts down after key employees leave office

The town clerk recently resigned, effectively forcing the town to shut down until further notice. The small town of Passadumkeag, Me., has essentially been shut down due the vacancy of several key positions.

The town lacks officials such as a town clerk and code enforcement officer, forcing it to figuratively close its doors as of April 21.that the last of the town’s—which lies roughly 30 miles north of Bangor—dominos fell with the resignation of its clerk, Christen Bouchard, who was also juggling the job of deputy treasurer as well as fulfilling the duties of licensing pets, registering vehicles, maintaining vital records, and liaising with the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

According to the same Bangor Daily News article, Bouchard’s resignation—which occurred after she was denied two weeks’ vacation —left Passadumkeag and its 350 or so residents without someone to issue any of the aforementioned documents or perform other key duties such as the assessment of property. As such, the town has been shut down until further notice.
