According to the U. S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook Salt Lake City in Utah, Wednesday morning, at 0709 hours. Here's a geological explainer, outlining why and what may happen next:

. This network is capable of producing far bigger earthquakes than today’s temblor. Per the U.S. Geological Survey, the central five fault segments, all active during the last 10,000 years or so, can produce magnitude 7.0 quakes every 900 to 1,300 years.

The mainshock is the most powerful of the sequence in terms of magnitude. They are preceded by smaller foreshocks and aftershocks, both caused by stress being released from the same faults or those very closely associated with the mainshock’s own. Aftershocks are expected to continue for some time in the area. The most probable near future will feature an ever-weakening series of aftershocks, but there is a non-zero chance that a larger quake in both areas may occur in the coming days – it’s vital to be congizant of that, especially if you live in Salt Lake City or nearby it. This is perfectly normal, seismologically speaking.

There will be likely be hundreds of aftershocks over the coming few weeks, with many being around a magnitude 3.0 or so – large enough to be felt by people near the epicentre, but probably not cause any serious damage – in the coming week. There is also a 19% chance of an aftershock coming in at a magnitude 5.0 or above in the next week, too, a temblor that would likely cause additional infrastructural damage.

I wonder if all the, floods, fires, pestilence, even locusts now, are signs of God's thoughts on the assertion. Still not listening, how about an earthquake?
