A view of the occultation should last about an hour for most people. Those in Minneapolis will see Mars disappear around 9:03 p.m. CST and reappear around 10:11 p.m., NASA said, while those in Los Angeles will be able to observe the phenomenon from around 6:31 p.m. PST to 7:31 p.m. The full moon will be at its peak at 11:08 p.m. EST.
NASA said that this event will mark a"relatively rare opportunity to watch a bright planet being occulted by the moon." "The moon passes in front of planets in the night sky several times per year. In fact, it generally occults Mars itself at least a couple of times per year," NASA said."But each occultation is visible from only a small portion of Earth's surface, so it's not super common for any particular spot on Earth to see them frequently."
