French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him in their marathon talks a day earlier that Moscow would not further escalate the Ukraine crisis.

KYIV, Ukraine — French President Emmanuel Macron said Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Moscow would not further escalate the Ukraine crisis.

The Kremlin wants guarantees from the West that NATO will not accept Ukraine and other former Soviet nations as members, that it halt weapon deployments there and roll back its forces from Eastern Europe — demands the U.S. and NATO reject as nonstarters. Macron said he had not expected Putin to make any “gestures” Monday, saying his objective was to “prevent an escalation and open new perspectives. ... That objective is met.”

NATO, U.S. and European leaders reject the demands that they say challenge NATO’s core principles, like shutting the door to Ukraine or other countries that might seek membership; but they have offered to discuss other Russian security concerns in Europe. More than 100 U.S. military personnel arrived in Romania ahead of a deployment of about 1,000 NATO troops expected in the country in the coming days, Romania’s Defense Minister Vasile Dincu said.

In 2015, France and Germany helped broker a peace deal, known as the Minsk agreements, that ended large-scale hostilities but failed to bring a political settlement of the conflict. The Kremlin has repeatedly accused Kyiv of sabotaging the deal, and Ukrainian officials in recent weeks said that implementing it would hurt Ukraine.

Macron hopes for 'start towards de-escalation' in Putin talks on UkraineFrench President Emmanuel Macron said Monday he hoped to make a start towards a de-escalation of tensions over Ukraine, as he began talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Since the USA claims to have dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan to prevent the expansion of the USSR, it is logical to assume that the United States is obliged to bomb Japan again, but with four nuclear bombs to prevent the expansion of Russian troops to the borders of NATO.

Macron Meets With Putin as France Tries to Flex Diplomatic Muscle Over UkraineThe French president is embarking on a round of shuttle diplomacy that aims to defuse the Ukraine crisis and encourage European countries to play a bigger role in the continent’s defense. It's a great privilege for a French president to speak to a Russian Khan like this - usually French speak to their Russian masters in a kneeling position. Napoleon's army entered Russia with more than 450,000 men, more than 150,000 horses, around 25,000 wagons and more than 1,250 pieces of artillery. Only 120,000 men survived. (excluding early deserters) And right after this meeting, Putin says: “Ukraine is a corpse waiting to be raped.” No joke. He really said that. On live TV.
