The moment when Luke Skywalker taunts Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is even crueler than it seemed. The First Order always knew Luke Skywalker was the greatest threat to its reign. After all, the legendary Jedi Master was the one who had defeated the Emperor once before, his faith in his father leading to the redemption of Darth Vader. And Luke grew over the years, claiming the inherited power of the Chosen One.
For Kylo Ren, of course, his focus on Luke Skywalker is personal. When Luke steps out to confront the First Order on Crait, he immediately becomes the sole focus of Kylo Ren's attention - so much so that he never stops to ponder just how any Jedi could withstand a barrage of fire from so many AT-ATs at once. Kylo Ren attempts to taunt his old master by claiming this is the moment when the Jedi and the Resistance die, but Luke is unimpressed."Amazing," he replies calmly.
The Rise of Kylo Ren subtly reinterprets Luke's taunt in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Luke has subtly chosen his words to mirror his encounter with Ren, indicating Kylo Ren is as foolish and insignificant to him as the entire Knights of Ren were - and dismissing him as a threat. Little wonder Kylo Ren's emotions surge, and he never stops to look in the Force, failing to recognize that Luke Skywalker is just an illusion - he's just been dealt a truly masterful insult.
And so Kylo Ren begins swinging his lightsaber - and, at first, Luke deals with him in exactly the same disdainful way he dealt with the Knights of Ren all those years ago. He ducks and weaves and avoids allowing any contact at all. To Kylo Ren, it all demonstrates the same kind of insulting treatment - when in reality it is simply that Luke is nothing more than an illusion, and there is nothing there to make physical contact with in the first place.
Too bad they didn't take there time developing the story properly for us to initially understand that. It felt repetitive tbh.
