Luke Skywalker’s explanation for how the Force works indicates that bloodlines don’t matter, as originally explored by the prequel trilogy.

In the Star Wars galaxy, Although the Force’s connection to bloodlines is convoluted throughout the sequels, Jedi Master Luke doesn’t let it go unresolved in Ben Solo’s origin story.

Throughout George Lucas’ Star Wars saga, the mechanics of the Force were referenced but never fully explained. The Jedi Council of the prequels included a diverse group of Jedi from many walks of life in the galaxy. During the sequels, Rey’s lineage seemed to contradict this idea, as some fans believed she had inherited the Force through a cloned Emperor Palpatine.

This isn’t news to longtime fans who observed how the Jedi interact with the Force in the prequel and original trilogies, but it brings some needed clarification for the sequel era. When Rey was initially revealed to be “a nobody” in The Last Jedi after being hinted for a connection to a Force sensitive family, it seemed to align with Lucas’ ideas.

With this fact about the Force in mind, it provides new context for Ben Solo’s backstory. He wasn’t set up for either failure or success, like his grandfather or his uncle. Instead, Ben had the door of the Force cracked open. Unlike any other Jedi Padawan, Ben had a head start with his training under Master Luke Skywalker. .
