Lowry Mays smiles Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, during the dedication of the Mays Center for Experiential Learning and Community Engagement. Mays has died at the age of 87,L. Lowry Mays, the accidental owner of a San Antonio radio station that grew into Clear Channel Communications, has died. He was 87.

As a second lieutenant at Brooks, Mays served as base petroleum officer, according to a biography on the foundation website. Subsequently, in an exchange program with the Nationalist Chinese government, the Air Force assigned him to take charge of construction of a pipeline in Taiwan. The company went public in 1984 and Mays began buying television stations in 1988. The company had a market capitalization of about $17 billion and owned around 1,200 radio stations at the time, and the Mays family divested their interests in it then, according to the foundation website.
