Zaila Avant-garde, a 14-year-old from New Orleans, Louisiana, won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, becoming the first African American contestant to win in 93 editions of the competition. The only Black winner before was Jody-Anne Maxwell, representing Jamaica in 1998.Avant-garde triumphed after correctly spelling murraya -- a type of tree -- to clinch the championship.
On Instagram, where she has gained a following of more than 14,000 people, she has shared her victorious journey toward the national spelling bee as well as videos of her playing basketball, impressing her followers with her hoop skills. National Spelling Bee canceled for the first time since WWII In addition to her spelling bee crown, Avant-garde was the Guinness World Records title holder for most bounce juggles in one minute.

Congratulations to Zaila!!! I would like to point out that the first BLACK GIRL to win the competition was Jody-Anne Maxwell from Jamaica in 1998. Maxwell, who was then only 12 years old, spelled 'chiaroscurist' and won the competition beating 248 other finalists.

We need “School Choice” which evens out the playing field for black people. The school system has become ineffective in educating children. abandoning the very reason they go class, the students. Having competition with Charter Schools would make better education for all.
