A 7-year-old girl died Friday after being attacked by a pit bull in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana, authorities said. The dog's owner has been arrested.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office reports that the attack occurred at about 6:30 p.m. local time Friday. The girl was rushed to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries, the sheriff's office said. She was not immediately identified. The dog's owner, identified as 20-year-old Erick Lopez, was taken into custody on allegations of negligent homicide, according to a probable cause form obtained by CBS News.
The girl was playing outside a relative's home when a neighbor's dog"viciously attacked her," according to the probable cause form. The relative tried unsuccessfully to halt the attack by hitting the dog with a walking cane, sheriff's investigators said.
"This is an awful, heart-breaking tragedy," East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said in a statement."My heart goes out to this family, and they will remain in my prayers."

A one year old was killed by a pit bull last summer 2022 in New Orleans, the Gentilly neighborhood. Its disgusting. This happens often enough to suggest we as a society value a breed of dog over our children's lives.

A child died because the owners of that dog were negligent and likely abusive. No such thing as bad dogs. Only evil owners.

Yeah, as much as I like the breed, we have to ban pitbull ownership. The people who own them are reckless and train them to be vicious, which isn't a problem with most breeds, but it is with these dogs with powerful jaws.

This story is is so damn horrific . That beautiful girl suffered in her death. Her face and skull were mauled. I would never trust a Pit Bill around a child , I don’t care how nice someone says it is.

Pits can be amazing dogs. They are not born aggressive. It's all about their training. If the owners allow them to be aggressive they will be! Truly sad that this had to happen. Glad to see the owner is in custody.
How are people supposed to feel free to get out and walk for exercise?
The owner knew the dog was unrestrained and that the dog roamed the neighborhood. These dogs should be banned and the owner should go to prison.

Owners fault. Pit bulls are a lot of work and a lot of their owners are negligent A holes who get them to look tough. Owner probably never took the poor dog for a walk.
