Louisiana this week followed trail blazed by Alabama when it comes to promoting public displays of the Ten Commandments – and, indeed, went further than the Yellowhammer State has.

It's got some similarities to an Alabama law that doesn't go as far.

Alabama is no stranger to legal fights over the commandments. Former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore famously installed a granite monument in the lobby of the Alabama Judicial Building in 2001. The ensuing legal challenges ultimately led to his removal from office. That stands in stark contrast to the law that Landry signed, mandating the Ten Commandments to be displayed in every public school classroom.

“I think they should be required, should never be abandoned,” he said. “Yes, I believe that the Ten Commandments …because the good Lord’s in charge. Majority want the Ten Commandments.”Mobile resident Aaron Etheridge said he believes there’s nothing wrong with having the Ten Commandments in schools on a voluntary basis. But he added that he is uncomfortable with the government mandating it.
