The Lorain City Schools released a statement following the shooting outside of the school Thursday.

Superintendent Jeff Graham sent a letter Tuesday morning sharing his appreciation for everyone who stepped in when the school went into lockdown Thursday afternoon.

“Our staff, students, safety team and the Lorain Police Department are to be credited for their roles in keeping our children physically and emotionally safe during an event no one should ever have to experience,” Graham says. The school went into lockdown after 20-year-old Jamol Geiger fired shots outside of the school during dismissal.

“By now I hope you’ve seen the video of Officer Gerace sprinting toward the gunfire. I hope you’ve learned that Lorain Police Chief Jim McCann was on site throughout, commanding the situation from the schools where our staff and children were in need of protecting. And I also hope you’ve heard the words of Officer Gerace and all the police officers working on our behalf that day, who humbly stated, “We were just doing our jobs,” when thanked for all they did that day,” Graham writes.

Geiger has been charged with inducing panic and improperly discharging a firearm in a school safety zone, as well as resisting arrest, obstructing official business and felonious assault.
