Michelle Mann DALEVILLE—“I solemnly swear that I will support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, so help me God.” With those words Nick Long was sworn in as Postmaster of the Daleville and Fort Novosel area in a ceremony held at the Daleville Cultural and Convention Thursday morning.
Long comes from a chain of postal service on both sides of the family, said his father Ricky Long, who joined his son for the swearing-in ceremony. Ricky Long retired as Postmaster of the Walker County town of Nauvoo and Joyce Long, his stepmother, currently is postmaster at Hackleburg in Marion County. “Nick has been in the post office since the day he was born. This is all he’s ever known,” said his father. “We are so very proud of Nick because of what he has accomplished in his short tenure.
“The people that work for you go ‘above and beyond’ just delivering the mail,” said Daleville Mayor Jayme Stayton as he welcomed Long to what he called “the best post office in the state of Alabama. “The position of postmaster is unique because, like a mayor, there is only one per community,” said United Postmasters and Managers of America President Kristie Grant. “Nick has chosen the eagle as the theme of his installation. As a symbol of leadership, the eagle has powerful vision with focus and clarity. It is fearless, determined to protect its territory, it is a tenacious defender. Eagles spread their wings and use the current of the storm to soar to even greater heights.
