The Long Beach State men’s volleyball team is two wins from its third national title in four seasons after receiving the top seed for the seven-team NCAA championships on Sunday., but the Big West regular-season champs received one of the two at-large berths for the tournament, which is scheduled for May 1-7 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. Three-time national champion LBSU won back-to-back national titles in 2018-19 before the pandemic canceled the 2020 season.
As the top seed, Long Beach has earned a bye into the semifinals, its fifth NCAA Final Four showing in six seasons. MPSF regular-season champion UCLA and MPSF Tournament champ Pepperdine will square off in a first-round match on May 3 at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to face LBSU in a May 5 semifinal scheduled for 5 p.m.
The tournament begins on May 1 with an opening-round match between surprise EIVA Tournament champion Princeton and Conference Carolinas champion North Greenville . The winner advances to a first-round match on May 3 against defending national champion Hawaii . The winner of that match advances to face No. 2 seed Ball State , the MIVA champion, in the other May 5 semifinal.
This is the 16th time UCLA has hosted the event, but the 19-time champions have not won the title since sweeping Penn State in 2006. UCLA and Long Beach met in a thrilling five-set match in the 2018 final, also at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA was upset by fifth-seeded Stanford in an MPSF Tournament semifinal last week.
Five-time national champion Pepperdine is among a few surprises in the field. The Waves finished third in the MPSF in the regular season but earned their spot by beating sixth-seeded BYU, second-seeded USC and Stanford over four nights in the MPSF Tournament last week at Pauley Pavilion.
