President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will square off in a debate Thursday night in an unprecedented election matchup of two presidents in a unique set of circumstances taking place at the earliest point in the general election since debates started being televised in 1960.
The event is taking place in the middle of summer when many Americans are taking vacations, going on trips and generally are not tuned into national politics. It is the earliest televised debate in over 60 years of having them, with the earliest prior not coming until September. Americans on both sides of the aisle also said the debate is important for both campaigns in a matchup of two of the most unpopular presidents in history. Both men have had approval ratings below 40% for years and many voters think both are too old to serve as president but Trump and Biden cruised through primaries with little challenge.lost some momentum
Voters have generally agreed Biden is too old to run for another four years in office but have also said they have an issue with the 78-year-old Trump. Regardless of who wins the Nov. 5 election, they will become the oldest president in American history. Immigration is also a potential issue for Biden come November and another area where Trump gets more support from voters. Trump has made immigration and cracking down on border crossings centerpieces of his campaign and first term in office.
“This also will be the first opportunity where President Biden has the ability to bring this up in a debate, mention that Trump is a convicted felon and even bring more attention to that matter, and seeing what Trump's reaction to that will be interesting,” Kall said.
