Lobbying disclosure reports show that Maria Ressa, who founded news website Rappler Inc. in the Philippines, has tapped two partners out of Covington & Burling to help her with a foreign relations campaign against Duterte.

The filing shows that Peter Lichtenbaum and Kurt Wimmer are working with Ressa. Lichtenbaum, who served in President George W. Bush's administration, is one of dozens of previous national security officials who signed the "Never Trump" declaration.

Ressa was arrested in the Philippines for a second time in March after her media publication was critical of Duterte's government. Philippine officials charged her and Rappler with breaking laws as it pertained to foreign ownership of the company. Ressa has also been accused of libel, and that trial is currently ongoing.Ressa, Wimmer and Lichtenbaum did not respond to requests for comment.

Duterte has repeatedly called Trump his friend. Trump met with the Philippines leader in November 2017. Months after Trump was sworn into office, he called Duterte to praise him on the crackdown of drug cartels since he became the country's leader, according to a"I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem," Trump told Duterte, the transcript read.

schwartzbCNBC DismissDisinformation TruthWillPrevail MariaRessaSucks

schwartzbCNBC mariaressa is so irrelevant in the Philippines she needed lobbyists in the US to help her be “relevant” again. 😂 Nope. She’s a purveyor of fake news who got busted, getting sued for libel by businessmen and regular folks and hunted by the government for unpaid taxes. Good luck!

schwartzbCNBC I am sure CNN hates Duterte! He is outspoken, rude, crude and harsh. But worst of all, he is actually doing something to address the huge crime in the PI, the drug gangs, their murders and violence. CNN, like the Dems, seem to only care about what is best for the criminals!

schwartzbCNBC those charges happened or was filed long before Duterte took over as president..she does not file taxes as well and if you visit her office they are mostly made up of interns, unpaid staff on training

and for your information maria ressa is free she has a tax evasion case and a libel case against private citizen and they blaming duterte for this?

schwartzbCNBC where did you get the figure of 23000 did you do your research or you just believed of what maria ressas fake news..

Unsurprisingly we witness the world of the medias becoming increasingly propagandist in the US as elsewhere in western democracies, as a result of wealth & power concentration We're becoming fascist democracies based on a neo-feudal capitalist/elitist ideology
