Before the Super Outbreak of 2011, and arguably including that event, the worst modern tornado outbreak happened almost exactly 50 years ago. On April 3-4, 1974, 148 tornadoes scoured the land from the Ohio Valley to the South and into portions of the Appalachians. Even southern Canada took a hit. The setup was not completely dissimilar to the current one, featuring strong low pressure marching through the central United States toward the Great Lakes. Similar is not necessarily the same.
An astonishing 30 violent tornadoes, rated F4 or F5 — the strongest on the scale — touched down in the 1974 Super Outbreak. More than 300 people were killed in 12 states, while scores more were injured. Among the onslaught of intense twisters, seven were rated F5. The first of the day touched down in Indiana, while others would strike Kentucky, Ohio and Alabama later in the day and into the night. April begins what is typically the most tornado-prone three months in the United States.
