Saturday morning, Giants players were asked what the first thing Logan Webb should do after signing his $90 million extension that will keep him with the Giants through 2028. If their suggestions hold true, Webb is going to be buying a lot of dinners, a few Rolexes and his wife, Sharidan, more than a few gifts.
But Webb had something else in mind when he inked his five-year extension: His cousin, Kade, who died last December, two nights before Webb’s wedding, when he was sold a counterfeit pain pill that was laced with fentanyl, the powerful opioid that takes the lives of 150 Americans every day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He was 20 years old.
“For me it’s important to be able to contribute,” Webb said. “I think the Fentanyl awareness all over the country, but especially in California, being able to really attack that, it’s really important to me, it’s really important to my family.”last season, Webb’s family got a phone call that Kade was in a Safeway parking lot and something was wrong. They raced to the Roseville grocery store, a town over from their home in Rocklin, and remained there until 4 or 5 in the morning, Webb recalled.
“Someone had sold him a counterfeit pill. Unfortunately it took his life,” Webb said. “I just know how much it’s affected my family. Part of the reason why I want to get the awareness out is because I saw how devastating it was for my family. I really don’t want to see any other families have to deal with the same thing.”
