The centerpiece of Mayor Lori Lightfoot's efforts to crack down on crime after violence soared in 2021 will remain in limbo for at least another month.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s stalled proposal to fight crime by going after the profits earned by Chicago’s gangs will not get an up-or-down vote on Wednesday, one month after the proposal ran aground amid a deluge of criticism. For six months, Lightfoot has passionately defended her plan to give the city the power to seize the assets of gangs and adult gang leaders as a necessary tool at a time when homicides, carjackings and other violent crimes are surging.

ACLU of Illinois Director of Communications and Public Policy Ed Yohnka renewed his call for the mayor to drop the proposal. Deputy Mayor for Public Safety John O’Malley and Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Ernest Cato told alderpeople the measure would give them a new way to fight crime by threatening the only thing that gang leaders care about — their money.

The measure is also opposed by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 President John Catanzara who called it “political theater.”, Chicago’s version of the law would only be used to go after large amounts of money or assets, said Elena Gottreich, the deputy director of prosecutorial strategies for the Chicago Police Department.
