A group of Latino high school students will have a presence on the red planet in a historic mission that has boosted interest in science.
"The only way we can change that in the future is by starting with this current generation. So by igniting my students with a passion for science, that is the key that I have seen that can make a difference," Mundo said."Little by little, we will be changing those statistics." NASA's Perseverance mission included many firsts for the space agency, whose rover, led by Latina flight director, landed on the Martian surface Feb. 18 to roam for signs of ancient microbial life. Inside the rover is a small helicopter, named Ingenuity, which is scheduled next week to become the first vehicle ever to take flight on another planet. NASA also created its first Spanish-language show for its planetary landing.
Fernandez and his peers took what they had learned and applied it outside their classroom, creating Mundology Club, a space dedicated to STEM. They went on science-related trips, planted trees, visited New York City's museums, studied rocks at parks and talked to scientists.
