LOS ANGELES — The Black national anthem was born more than a century ago, but the popular hymn within the African American community called “Lift Every Voice and Sing” has resurrected a beacon of hope during nationwide protests.
“I saw whites singing that song saying ‘No justice, no peace’ and ‘’Black Lives Matter.’ It’s something I didn’t see early in my career or even 15 years ago,” recalled Rev. Al Sharpton while protesters in Minneapolis in the aftermath of Floyd’s death. “You got to see people other than us appreciating our song, our anthem. This is just not a moment. This is a real movement.”
During the civil rights movement, the song was popular during protests with the likes of “We Shall Overcome” and “Amazing Grace,” which was written by former slave trader John Newton but his song helped define racial equality.” enduring several generations speaks volumes. last month at the historic Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. The same happened in Los Angeles, Chicago, Baltimore and Minneapolis.“The song is a refreshment and renewal of my faith,” said Young, the civil rights leader and former Atlanta mayor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He said the singing of the song at protests shows how “desegregation of America is really the integration of cultures, ideals, energies and spirituality.
Along with the protest, the staying power of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” into broader audiences can also be credited to the biggest entertainers and political figures who have referenced it.the song in front of a mostly white audience at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in 2018. The late Rev.
Rev. Markel Hutchins said Biden’s reference to the song and hearing white Americans singing the lyrics has given him “hope and confidence, although we’re in a dark place as a nation today.”
MrLandrum31 You and other want to be journalist, trying to create an imagined black national anthem is so racist and divisive. It's nothing but a lie to suggest it but you have people paying you to write it. How posh!
❤😍
Lift Every Voice and Sing
A lot of God in that song. Can’t see progressives approving it.
As a person of color: “I hate that FUCKIN’ song.” Only those who seek ‘belonging’ & a need to feel their life matters will find a message in the sounds of ‘blackness’.
No it really doesn’t.
Then move to Liberia & sing it there.
We have one national anthem. Stop dividing us. That’s segregation and racist. The thing they are supposedly fighting against.
Black national anthem? What nation?
And the media blames trump for divisiveness? Fucking joke.
But yet we can’t sing in church? GTFOH!
This is great, but as a united nation we should only have one anthem.
NAACP is a racist organization by its very definition 🤷🏻♂️
Oh plz.....smh....
It’s an uplifting hymn/gospel song, that some may equate to a national anthem (a black one at that). It’s not in lieu of the National Anthem, it’s an addition to the many patriotic songs over the years (America the Beautiful, God Bless the USA, Battle Hymn of the Republic,...)
Anyone remember 'separate but equal'? Seems like BLM movement wants segregation.
To unify everyone the country should have one national anthem. No hyphenated citizens, just Americans. Equal rights for everyone. If we can do this then a path to peace can be achieved.
I never heard “Lift Every Voice” (originally a poem) until now. I would welcome this song as our new National Anthem with open arms!
The White House is all you need to know about how racist America is. Change the color of it and stop calling it the White House then I’ll take liberals serious about equality. But all they want is black votes and no real change.
Black National Anthem sounds pretty racist to me. Some Jim Crow shit right there.
CancelTrumpSong
Freddie Gray Sandra Bland Kaleif Browder Micheal Brown Eric garner Tamir rice Trayvon Martin Philando Castile These murders happened under Obama’s Administration without a single person ever being convicted so how is this Trump’s fault
The is only The National Anthem. Stop the divide and conquer which is Putin’s plan
After everyone found out about it and learned the lyrics of course. Stop acting like this has been a thing until now.
Don't edit past language. 'In 1919, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) dubbed it 'the Negro national anthem' for its power in voicing a cry for liberation and affirmation for African-American people.'
Implies racism calling it Black National Anthem, but originally written to celebrate Lincoln's birthday.
john_wawrow There is ONE National Anthem, just 1, The Star Spangled Banner
If liberals are serious about change. Change the color of the White House and stop calling it the White House. Isn’t that racist. But they r just trying to get vote, when they change the color of the White House and stop calling it the White House then I’ll believe real change
I think I’ll take a knee.
Racist.
When is the protest for this?
It's a heck of a lot better than 'The Star-Spangled Banner', which is a lot of musically horrible gibberish about an obscure and unimportant battle. Of course, most of the noise that was spewed out by The Osmonds is better than the current anthem.
Nonsense
Just saying it is the BLACK national anthem makes it racist... but then again that is what NAACP. is good at. Keeping racism alive so they have a reason to be.
Fascinating to study history of democracies and see that movements that sing and sit down peacefully to disrupt business as usual last far longer and are far more effective than movements that chant and 'clash.'
It is divisive, and is not our anthem.
Why does it to be the black national anthem? That also creates division. Change comes from all sides and everyone and everything.
Dems: Let’s give segregation one more try!
I will bet any amount of money that 99.99% of black people have no idea this even existed.
