Letters to the Editor

Cheryl Jackson hugs Nina Majmundar as they arrive for a remembrance event at Credit Union of Texas Event Center commemorating the 2023 mass shooting at Allen Premium Outlets on May 6, 2024, in Allen, Texas.Re: “Let’s get serious about stopping the next tragedy — Anniversaries of mass shootings also are reminders of a failed gun response,” by David Riedman, May 5 Opinion.

People, remember the innocent students and teachers who were brutally murdered at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. The future of our children is dependent on responsible gun legislation.I heard that two students who survived the 2018 high school shooting in Parkland, Fla., have died from self-inflicted gunshots. To be sure, with firearms so readily available we can expect more tragedies like this. It can happen at any time as long as the gun lobby maintains its death grip on our leaders.

In Michigan, tragically, the Crumbleys are spending years in prison for “giving” their son Ethan 15, a gun. Ethan is also in prison for life without parole. Why? Why? Why?offered a partial answer to “why” by stating that hardening our schools can’t fix our culture of violence fueled by easy access to guns.” Why? Why? Why? And now, a federal lawsuit is trying to block expanding background checks. Texas joined this suit.

Four brave law enforcement officers — including a deputy U.S. marshal — were killed in the line of duty. They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us. We mourn for them and their loved ones. And we pray for the recoveries of the courageous officers who were wounded.

Now leaders in Congress need to step up so that we can ban semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity magazines, require safe storage of guns, and pass universal background checks and a national red flag law. Enough is enough. May God bless these fallen heroes. At gun shows, most guns are sold by licensed dealers. There are also people who sell from private collections and they often make a profit. The reason is the fact that certain guns appreciate so fast that they are a better investment than silver or gold.A gun that is purchased for, say, a few hundred bucks may be worth much more in just a few years. An example is military arms. Our government bought thousands of .45-caliber pistols in World War II for $75 each.
