Re: “Tax Relief Fumbling Will Hurt Texans — Petty squabble among state leaders could leave public schools high and dry,” Wednesday editorial.Editorial Board! As a Texas public school educator for 26 years and a Texas born-and-raised citizen, I absolutely am appalled at what our Texas government has become.
It has been a very long time since I have felt valued by the Texas Legislature but this session makes it clear. Our representatives truly want to harm our public schools and do everything they can to make my once-loved profession a badge of shame, not honor. No wonder the teacher shortage in Texas is a growing crisis.Senate Bill 2368 has passed the Senate and is in the House.
When HB 2610 in 2016 allowed schools to go to minutes instead of days, this gave great flexibility. To force schools to 175 days will just make a teaching career even less enticing for those who prefer four-day weeks. Collectively we all helplessly shrug our shoulders and pursue our own lives. Over and over, I repeat to myself, “Are we done yet?” — done with this bloody stain on America’s people?
