East Bay Times Letters to the Editor for Aug. 2, 2022

Natasha BakerThe Jan. 6 hearings have wound down for the moment but I won’t forget what I learned — that what happened that day wasn’t an isolated attack on our Capitol. It’s part of an ongoing criminal conspiracy to undermine our freedom to vote and to choose our elected leaders.

Never before have we seen so many candidates running for office on a platform that promises to destroy our democracy from the inside out. Many of these right-wing extremists are looking to take over election administration, running for offices like secretary of state and county clerk. The only way to protect our elections is to fight back and make our voices heard. If our vote wasn’t powerful, insurrectionists wouldn’t be working so hard to take our freedom to vote away. It’s up to us to hold election deniers accountable at the polls and elect democracy defenders on Nov. 8.Many gun rights proponents say that security in schools and other public places should be enhanced. They also say that there should be enhanced oversight for those prone to use guns violently.

Modest proposal: Manufacturers, purveyors and owners of guns should be taxed to provide whatever is needed to prevent gun violence. They also should be taxed to alleviate the tragic aftereffects. One thing is perfectly clear at this point: People either support Donald Trump or they support the United States of America. There’s no overlap.

Even the formerly Trump-loving New York Post is telling us that the ex-President’s behavior on Jan. 6 cannot be defended.BA.5 has led to a surge in COVID cases within the Bay Area similar to what we’ve seen with previous COVID variants.

Health Care, Climate and Taxes: Here's What's in the Inflation Reduction ActPresident Joe Biden’s initial effort to rebuild America’s public infrastructure and family support systems had a price tag of $4 trillion. And it stalled in Congress. A much slimmer but still substantial compromise package costing $739 billion is now being considered by lawmakers. With strategies aimed at inflation-fighting health care, climate change and deficit reduction, the new measure appears headed toward quick votes in the Democratic-controlled House and Senate. A major component is allowing the Medicare program to negotiate prescription drug prices with pharmaceutical companies. That could save the federal government some $288 billion over 10 years, money that would help seniors pay for their medications. And raises the taxes on all taxpayers making over $30,000

Sen. Chuck Schumer to set vote on Pact Act Bill, which help veterans with illnesses caused by burn pitsSen. Chuck Schumer says he will schedule a vote this week on a bill to help veterans suffering from illnesses caused by toxic burn pits. The Pact Act Bill would expand health care and disability benefits to millions of veterans across the country. Democrats putting in 400 billion a year non discretionary Claus is reason why it won't Pass. I think Truth should be on Democrat Politicians using VETERAN'S HEALTH to sneak in Pork is unconscionable. Make zero changes to it and make Republicans vote on it exactly as it was. If you allow any change to it, Republicans will blame Dems for their no votes. Don’t fall for their trap. How about the taxes your going to raise on families under 400k
