Letter: Rep. Stewart should be replaced 'with someone who truly represents the majority of Utahns, including the approximately 33% of Utahns whom gerrymandering deliberately left without representation in Washington D.C.'

Rep. Stewart’s track record leaves much to be desired. Notably, he actively supported an immoral, criminally corrupt, twice impeached president and the insurrection he instigated. Further, his voting record went against the wishes of most Utahns on bills of importance to marginalized communities — including as regards women, gun safety, the environment and climate change.

The Republicans may have the opportunity to put a moderate such as Becky Edwards on the ballot. Democrats will likely choose between three candidates. Both parties need to carefully evaluate each candidate’s probability of winning, their positions on important issues, and their actual ability to do the job.

Importantly, they must show the moral integrity and courage needed to defend our Constitution, our democratic processes and norms, and the rule of law. Stated differently, the future of our planet, our country, and our citizens must come before party loyalty. None of this will happen without an informed and engaged electorate. The processes for this election — including party conventions, primaries and general elections — will occur “off cycle.” We cannot afford the voter apathy inherent in these typically low-turnout nonpresidential or midterm elections. Our country and our lives depend on it. Engage. Vote!
