: In Nordic countries, we pay some of the highest taxes in the world. Yet, 88% of people living in Denmark are happily paying their taxes. We often say that we are happy not despite the high taxes, but because of them. The taxes we pay enable us to enjoy a high quality of life and feel supported. For example, in Denmark, healthcare is free. Elderly care is free. Universityis free. Children’s day-care is heavily subsidized and schooling for children with special needs is also free.
We can learn a lot from exploring happiness around the world — about others, about ourselves, about the “magic things,” as the poets say, “that are patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” It’s heartening to know that no matter which oceans and hills surround us, which seasons and fates befall us, humans will never run out of ways to mill joy from their finite, fleeting hours. Sometimes, alone. Often, together.
As a danish resident this annoys me
First and foremost, live in a wealthy country based on tons of natural resources with small population.
I really like this part 🙂 this is how community works
Everyday I drive down I-95 outside Philadelphia. I take note of the countless billboards, the reckless speeding, overwhelming police presence, and I think of what a disastrous way of life we have created.
Nordic countries have some of the best balance between work/family life. Have short workdays, paid vacations, subsidized childcare, maternity, paternity leave. Allows for downtime to stay connected w/loved ones, nature, eat well/feel well. Watch lots Nordic films! Agree w/all.
Nordic countries have high levels of trust. Research shows they trust neighbors, their government, their public services, so are happier than those who don’t. It’s not uncommon to see parents safely leaving their babies in strollers outside restaurants/shops for a short while.
They successfully convert wealth into wellbeing by investing in the common infrastructure. Everyone has internet. This enables Danes to thrive socially, physically, mentally, and at school. Equality. It is not about the wealth accumulated, but what is done with wealth they have.
Pay high taxes enabling high quality of life, feel supported. Healthcare is free. Elderly care is free. University education is free. Day-care is heavily subsidized, schooling for children w/special needs is free. Every Dane citizen is entitled to economic support if unemployed.
These countries are happiest because they don’t stigmatize mental health care when issues arise. Use negotiators, liaison services, for problems: personal, professional. They don’t hold grudges after arguments. They apologize easily. They eat well. Get exercise. Love outdoors.
Happiness is back in style. I’d add one more... - A sense of (financial) security. Think it hard for anyone to feel joy when constantly worried about money during any hard times. It’s then people need to gather to help each other out best they can. And that is the Danish way.
In the words of the great Mrs Doyle “Maybe I like the misery”.
