They fell asleep while it was still light out, diagonal on the bed, Ally’s arm slung loosely over Timmy’s side, her nose in the place where their hair met their neck. It was the kind of floaty, effortless sleep that didn’t feel like sleeping at all, until Ally woke at 2 a.m. in near blackness. She rolled herself carefully out from behind Timmy, easing her feet onto the floor.
In the kitchen, the glow from the neighbors’ pool cast the kitchen in false moonlight. Ally’s new succulent sat on the counter, potting soil still scattered across the counter. She tried not to think about where the plant would live. Her stuff was still at Caz’s, and she felt the fuzzy irritability of not having taken her anti-depressant on time, that minuscule oval that seemed to exert a gravitational force over her behavior.
Ally. My mom died. She finally did it. I can’t believe it. Funeral next Thursday. Will you tell your mother? She would have wanted you there. Hope we can put it all aside and just celebrate Mandy, more than she was able to celebrate herselfMandy.
