Some elite universities are walking back the practice of giving the children of alumni preferential treatment in admissions, in some cases reacting to the public distrust of college admissions that was laid bare last year in the nationwide cheating scandal.
The practice, called legacy preference, is out-of-step with many schools’ stated goal of attracting a more diverse student body, admissions officers say.
My son got into every Ivy and top institution he applied to. Meanwhile despite three family member Yale grads, that august school wait-listed him. No matter, 1st choice was Columbia, graduated summa cum laude.
Is the aristocracy privilege dead? Not even close, but some elite universities have done the unthinkable, and are bending toward justice and away from the untoward practice of giving the children of alumni preferential treatment in admission & other institutionalized line jumping
