, a satellite network designed for the U.S. military, could be a lifeline for Taiwan in the face of growing aggression.
“SpaceX is possibly withholding broadband internet services in and around Taiwan — possibly in breach of SpaceX’s contractual obligations with the U.S. government,” Gallagher, chair of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, wrote. He asked Musk to brief the committee on StarShield’s status in Taiwan by March 8.The letter comes as tensions between China and Taiwan have escalated recently. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to reunify it.
Musk, however, has a complicated relationship with both sides. He has a huge presence in China, where his electric car company, Tesla, has aand a loyal fan base. He has also expressed sympathy for China’s position on Taiwan, suggesting in 2022 that some compromise could be reached to ease the conflict.
Gallagher and other lawmakers visited Taiwan this week and met with President Tsai Ing-wen and other officials. They discussed the need for StarShield and learned that the network is currently inactive in Taiwan, according to “multiple sources” cited by Gallagher. However, StarShield is one of many options for Taiwan’s communication security. Some experts argue that relying on a single network could be risky and that Taiwan should diversify its sources of satellite internet.
