Leaders of the House Ways and Means Cmte. and the Senate Finance Cmte. say they have struck a bipartisan deal to pass legislation that would ban the import of energy products from Russia.

Whether President Joe Biden, who has not committed to a ban on Russian oil, will sign the legislation remains unknown.

The agreement also calls for a suspension in normal trade relations with Russia and its ally Belarus. The bipartisan legislation would provide the president with authority to further increase tariffs on products from those two countries and would require the U.S. trade representative to seek the suspension of Russia's participation in the World Trade Organization.

"Taking these actions will send a clear message to Putin that his war is unacceptable and the United States stands firmly with our NATO allies," the four lawmakers said in a joint statement. The lawmakers include Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., and top Republican Kevin Brady of Texas, as well as Senate Finance Chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and top Republican Mike Crapo of Idaho.

"While Congress needs to do more, as the congressional leaders with jurisdiction over our nation’s trade policy, we are committed to using the tools at our disposal to stop Russia’s unconscionable and unjust war on Ukraine and to hold Belarus accountable for its involvement," they said.— to ban Russian oil imports as it ramps up its attacks on Ukraine.

katherineOma Then do it, now.

This is crazy! After Republicans refused to sign any law to protect democracy and America for 5 years (and actually undermined democracy and America), they suddenly sign this bill. They signed this bill to destroy America's economy, days after Biden's amazing jobs report. Msg 1/7

Only fake (or moronic) Democrats, like Nancy Pelosi & Chuck Schumer, would support this Republican trap legislation. Every day that Dems don't fall for the Repubs efforts to sabotage the US economy and democracy the chances of democrats winning the mid-terms increases. Msg 2/7

People can determine the wisest path by looking at what European nations are doing. Currently, two European nations (Russia & Ukraine) are engage in a war, and EVERY EUROPEAN nation has opted NOT to ban Russian oil. Yet, US Republicans, Pelosi and Schumer want this. Msg 3/7

Then, when Repubs & Pelosi & Schumer get the Democrats voted out of the House & Senate (because the economy is awful -because Dems & Repubs voted to block Russian oil), the Republicans can repeal voting rights, reproductive rights, worker rights & sexual minority rights. Msg 4/7

It's staggeringly disappointing that no US 'Progressive' had the vision (or the courage) to see: (1) how this legislation sets the stage for a Republican mid-term landslide (allowing Repubs to protect Trump & destroy democracy); (2) that Europe is not banning Russian oil. 5/7

This plot to subvert Democrats midterm elections is so transparent that Democrats should demand Pelosi & Schumer's resignation (which should have happened decades ago). If any of Biden's cabinet supported this idea they should be fired for being Republican operatives. Msg 6/7

Biden should have the acumen to see through this crap by now. Obama & Clinton fell for this crap too. What will it take to finally get a Democratic party President who understands the game (and understand that the stakes are democracy and freedom) and plays it like a pro? Msg 7/7

Bipartisan but for two different reasons. Republicans, so they can the bash Biden when gas and heating oil prices skyrocket. Democrats, to do the right thing
