House and Senate negotiators agreed to rescind the military's Covid-19 vaccine mandate, a measure that was added to secure GOP support for an annual defense-policy bill

WASHINGTON—House and Senate negotiators agreed to rescind the requirement that members of the military be vaccinated against Covid-19, a measure that was added to secure Republican support for the annual defense-policy bill that authorizes spending for new weapons and pay increases for troops.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke in favor of a proposal to fold an energy-permitting overhaul into the defense bill.Republicans had pushed for the bill to end the Defense Department’s Covid-19 vaccine rule from August 2021, arguing that it would help recruitment. Roughly 3,400 U.S. military members have been discharged for refusing to get the vaccine as of April, according to a letter that 13 Senate Republicans sent to party leaders on the issue last week.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had criticized Democrats for trying to include nondefense provisions, calling them a “grab bag of miscellaneous pet priorities.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had defended the proposals.Catch up on the headlines, understand the news and make better decisions, free in your inbox every day.“We’ve been working with Republicans,” he said. “It’s a priority for me. I’d like to get it done. We’ll try to discuss the best way to get it done.

“I think it’s becoming increasingly likely that we may need to do a short-term CR into early next year,” said Mr. McConnell, referring to a continuing resolution that keeps funding at current levels.

What a disgrace. Politics over national security.

Lol

Ambiguously worded

Ffs. This is stupid and has a significant impact on the maintenance of good order and discipline.

Ah yeah Republicans were definitely gonna defund the military if they hadn't done this, good job guys that definitely wasn't the most transparent and easily-called bluff for a hundred years

Great, can the bill also disclaim any obligation for American taxpayers to pay for the veterans healthcare for long-term Covid conditions for those military personnel who exercise their ‘freedom’ and fail to get the vaccine? Also thanks for degrading our national security ✔️

WTF. SenateDems SpeakerPelosi

Pure idiocy

I assume everyone still needs to be vaccinated for smallpox, anthrax, diphtheria, measles, and a whole bunch of other crap that’s not political though, right?

Cowardice.

And our tax dollars will pay for VA treatment of Covid, long Covid, and other conditions related to Covid infections. Way to go.

Excellent!

Now do federal civilian employees. Biden admin still in court fighting to reinstate covid vaccine mandates on federal employees. Also forcing unvaccinated to be tested for covid. END ALL MANDATES NOW!

Common sense! Why did it take so long? Guess the saying common sense isn't so common is true especially in Washington!

canmericanized About fscking time they rescinded the jab. Now offer the job back to everyone you fired, with severance pay.

so in basic training, they are required to get vaccines for influenza meningococcal measles, mumps, rubella varicella tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis BUT NOT for covid lol

This will make absolutely zero difference in recruitment numbers, past a few isolated cases from rural hold outs

Don't they understand that troop readiness affects national security?

Didn't people already leave the military or get in some sort of trouble? It seems a little too late to go back now.

One step of many.
