Stephen Sondheim’s much-anticipated final musical, “Here We Are,” will premiere in September at the electric New York venue known as The Shed, the leading theater producer Tom Kirdahy announced Thursday.

Previously known as “Square One,” the musical, written at the end of the late Sondheim’s life, features a book by the playwright David Ives and was inspired by two Luis Buñuel films “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel.

” Both movies satirize elitist pretension, a frequent theme in the musicals that make up Sondheim’s singular body of work.Joe Mantello will direct what is billed as a “strictly limited engagement” at The Shed’s Griffin Theatre. Ticketing and casting information has yet to be announced.
