The Last of Us causes a 50-year-old song by Linda Ronstadt to chart in the Top 5 on iTunes. The post-apocalyptic zombie series has already made a habit of using classic songs to underscore important moments, including the final scene of the first episode's needle drop of Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again," which indicates that danger is brewing despite its cheerful nature.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY This week, the iTunes charts reflected the fact that the public continues to fall in love with The Last Of Us episode 3. The song, which is now 53 years old, has had such a boom in sales that it reaches No. 4 on the iTunes chart this week. The only songs above it were two singles from Morgan Wallen's upcoming album and the new Miley Cyrus track "Flowers."The Horror Genre Has a Record of Breathing New Life Into Classic Songs "Long Long Time," which is a track off Ronstadt's album Silk Purse, only ever reached No. 25 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 during its original release.
The Last Of Us soundtrack's ability to allow singles to time travel and re-chart isn't exclusive to the zombie series. The horror genre has been able to breathe new life into classic songs. Just last year, Netflix's retro horror-fantasy-adventure series Stranger Things made the 1985 Kate Bush song "Running Up That Hill " chart again, reaching a peak of No. 3 on the Hot 100 – which was a feat it never achieved in its original release.
While chart performance like this is reflective of the unpredictable nature of Internet virality, The Last of Us' needle-drop success has precedent throughout the history of the genre. For instance, the 1991 thriller The Silence of the Lambs included the classic tracks "American Girl" by Tom Petty and "Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus during momentous scenes, bringing both songs either renewed or wider attention.
So glad I don’t watch this show anymore.
