Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis donated $1 million to the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in Texas, which he announced during a Zoom call.

The donation will go toward strengthening security across its various campuses, not just the affected Robb Elementary, with impenetrable doors, cameras, and fences. In the case of Robb Elementary, the shooter attempted to get in several doors but eventually made his way into the school through a door that was reportedly propped open.

Davis cited Raiders Superbowl XVIII champion Vann McElroy as his reason behind the donation. The retired player and owner had a conversation two weeks ago, according to Davis, which was about a week following the shooting.McElroy is a native of Uvalde, with a grandson currently enrolled in a public school in the district.

“We thank Mr. Davis and the Raiders organization for this very generous gift. Vann is a life-long friend and a huge part of Uvalde,” UCISD Superintendent Hal Harrell said.Actor Matthew McConaughey is also a native of Uvalde-turned-celebrity who has since embarked on a campaign for stricter gun laws following the mass shooting.
