Brown — the former Knicks head coach, Long Beach native, East Hampton summer resident and Hall of Famer — is a part of Memphis’ renaissance as a basketball mecca.
Brown, 81, joined Penny Hardaway’s staff as an assistant coach of the Memphis Tigers before the season. Brown likely will be dancing again, with Memphis favored to make the NCAA Tournament, for the first time since he coached SMU in 2015. It’s his first assistant job since he served under North Carolina’s Dean Smith from 1966-68.
As Morant lifted the Grizzlies over the Knicks, Brown’s Tigers were routing Central Florida in the AAC quarterfinals in Fort Worth, Texas. But Brown has seen enough of Morant as a new Memphis resident. Brown’s players attend a slew of Grizzlies’ games at their shared arena. “I watched him [in college] but I couldn’t predict this,’’ Brown told The Post. “He reminds me so much of Allen [Iverson] athletically the way he pays. Fearless. That whole [Grizzlies] team they have a great camaraderie.
“The things Ja does, I remember sitting on the bench in Philly, looking at staff and seeing Allen do something and we all laughed because we never seen anyone doing anything like that. I get the same feeling watching Ja play. And a lot of our kids go to their games.’’ Brown met Hardaway when he coached him with the Knicks in 2005-06 and started a relationship.
“Last year was such a dream,’’ Brown said. “They lost some people, but you can’t explain how important Derrick Rose was to that team. He was such a big part. They lose their best defensive guard [Reggie Bullock] and Thibs is such a stickler for having a defensive presence. But the last few games [3-1] have been amazing. I still think there’s still time left.’’ The Knicks are running out of time after blowing a 15-point, late-third-quarter lead in Memphis to cap a six-game road trip at 3-3.
