The huge snake Titanoboa weighed approximately 1,135 kg, but could the newly discovered Vasuki Indicus in India claim the title of “the largest ever”?An ancient species of snake, Vasuki Indicus, lived around 47 million years ago in the state of Gujarat in India. According to research published in Scientific Reports, it could be one of the largest snake species to have ever lived on Earth.
In the study, the researchers described 27 well-maintained vertebra. Some were connected, so it looked like they belonged to an adult animal. Due to the measures of vertebrae, they assume that it had a broad and cylindrical body. The measure stands between 37.5 and 62.7 millimeters in length and 62.4 and 111.4 millimeters in width. Based on this, they estimated that the length of V. Indicus ranged from 10.9 to 15.2 meters.
But in the case of Vasuki Indicus, the authors are uncertain over these estimates. They also speculate that V. Indicus’ large size made it a slow-moving, ambush predator, something like an anaconda. This discovery of Vasuki Indicus provides valuable insights into the ecosystems of the past. Also, scientists can gain a better understanding of snake evolution.Back in 2016, scientists announced the discovery of what they believed were dinosaur fossils in the state of Gujarat in India. Gujarat, sometimes called India’s Jurassic Park, is home to one of the world’s largest collections of
